The B4558 runs from the A40 at Cefn Brynich, just to the east of Brecon, to the A4077 at Crickhowell, northwest of Abergavenny. It parallels the A40, but runs on the opposite side of the River Usk.
The road appears to have been first classified at some time around the mid-1930s, as it appears on the 1939 OS Ten Mile Road Map, but not in the 1934 edition.
