The B5042 acted as a short western bypass of Stoke town centre in Stoke-on-Trent. It ran along Shelton Old Road from the A52 to the then-A5006 just before its bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal.
With the building of the A500 and the routing of through traffic away from the town centre, the B5042 was renumbered as a spur of the A52. The northern end of the road is now lost under the A500.
