The B5249 is described in the 1922 Road Lists as Link at Croston.
The road starts at a mini-roundabout on the B5247 in the north of Croston, immediately south of a bridge over the Preston to Ormskirk railway line. It heads east, immediately crossing another mini-roundabout, along Moor Road.
After leaving the built-up area of Croston the route remains semi-urban, with fields adjacent to the road but also a number of houses; the road never enters open country and the speed limit never gets above 40. The road continues eastward across Barber's Moor to end on the A581, where that road has to TOTSO.
