Route
The B5420 is a largely rural B-road on Anglesey.
The road starts on the A545 High Street in Menai Bridge and heads west along Dale Street to reach a roundabout on the A5. The two roads cannon off each other and the B5420 leaves the roundabout heading north along Pentraeth Road. We then cross the A5025 at the Four Crosses roundabout to enter open country.
We follow a winding route to the northwest across open fields, with the hills of Snowdonia sometimes visible in the rear-view mirror. After climbing through Penmynydd there's a steep descent into the valley of the Afon Ceint. The road now remains lower down and shortly enters Llangefni along Penmynydd Road. The road ends on the near side of town at a TOTSO on the B5109; that road continues ahead into the town centre.
History
The B5420 came into being in 1935 but did not follow any of the above route. When the B4420 was upgraded to Class I status this left a short section of Class II road north of the A5, which was given the B5420 number as the old number would have been out-of-zone. As such the road started at the A5/A4080 junction in Llanfair PG and headed northeast to end on the A5025 at Four Crosses.
In 1980 with the opening of the Britannia Bridge to road traffic, the A5025 and B5420 had their routes swapped south of Four Crosses, with the A-road now pointing towards the new bridge and the B-road ending in the town of Menai Bridge. Around the same time our road was extended northeastwards into Llangefni, giving it its present route.
