The B6012 was the original number of the road from the A6 at Belper east to the A608 at Smalley. In 1971 the road became a westward extension of the A609, which it remains.
Starting on the A6 in Belper the road headed east through town, over the railway line and through the Market Place before following the A609's present westbound route out of town. The road then headed southeastwards to cross the A61 (present B6179) and enter Kilburn. A sharp left-hand bend in the village took the road on an easterly course into Smalley, where it ended on the A608.
