Watson Road

The B6040 follows much of the pre-bypass route of the A57 through Worksop. It gained its number when that road was rerouted in the 1980s.

Starting at a roundabout at the eastern end of the A57 bypass the B6040 heads north past the Manton Wood Industrial Estate then goes under a disused railway bridge to meet the B6079 at another roundabout. Here it bears left onto Retford Road. Behind the trees on the right are the Chesterfield Canal and River Ryton.

After passing more light industry and a cemetery the road becomes lined with houses as it continues on. The B6041 bears right at traffic lights, after which we follow Cheapside and Potter Street towards the town centre. It's not long before a mini-roundabout is reached. The old A57 continued ahead here but its route is now partly pedestrianised so we turn right onto the suburban Watson Road. We pass Asda and the modern bus station to meet the B6024 at traffic lights. After going over the River Ryton the road becomes lined with shops and we soon reach traffic lights where we TOTSO right to rejoin the ex-A57.

We follow Bridge Place to cross an easy-to-miss bridge over the Chesterfield Canal and reach traffic lights. Here we bear left (ahead is the B6045 whilst the road to the right leads to a car park) onto Gateford Road and climb past a few more shops to a mini-roundabout by St John's Church. Traffic lights are soon reached where the A60 comes in from the left and we multiplex along that road under the railway bridge ahead to the next set of lights where the B6040 regains its number by turning left.

Now back in the suburbs we continue along Gateford Road past a large Tesco and a number of rows of houses. Presently the road becomes dual to assist in the junction with the B6041 coming in from the right. That road now takes on the road ahead, returning traffic to the A57.
