For the original B6196 to the south of Rochdale, see B6196 (Rochdale - Shaw).
The B6196 is an urban road in south Lancashire. The road was originally unclassified but gained its number in 1935.
The road starts in the Bolton suburb of Bradshaw at traffic lights, where the A676 TOTSOs; our road continues eastwards along that road's alignment. After running through Harwood the road starts to cross open fields, although it still has a semi-urban air and the speed limit never increases.
After crossing a stream we go over a ridge to enter Ainsworth. A sharp left-hand bend takes us through the village centre, after which a glimpse of open country takes us into Starling, essentially a suburb of Bury. The B6292 turns right at traffic lights, then we follow Ainsworth Road into town, presently meeting the B6212 at a mini-roundabout. After passing a park we descend to journey's end at traffic lights on the A58, where traffic is forced to turn left towards the town centre.
