|Route outline (key)|
The B6317 is a largely urban B-road in north Durham.
The road starts at traffic lights on the A692 Lobley Hill Road, not far from Team Valley, and heads west along the Whickham Highway (although this is by no means a new road). To the right the road is built-up but there are fields to the left; this situation remains until a hospital is passed (on the right) and the road enters Whickham.
The B6317 runs along Front Street in Whickham, meeting the B6316 at traffic lights in the town centre. Shortly the road bends to the right and descends Swalwell Bank. At the bottom of the hill is a set of traffic lights. This marks the original western end of the B6317, where it ended on the A6081. However, that road disappeared with the construction of the western bypass (now A1). There is a short spur to the right to a roundabout from where east-facing slip roads access the A1 but the mainline of the B6317 turns left along the ex-A6081 to cross the River Derwent and cross the A694 at a roundabout.
On the far side of the roundabout the road reaches Blaydon. It heads along Shibdon Road to the cemetery, where Shibdon Road bears off to the left. This is the original classified road through the town centre. However, the B6317 now continues along a relatively new relief road to reach a roundabout, part of a GSJ on the A695. Whereas most maps claim all the slip roads to be part of the B6317 (those facing east are surprisingly long), the mainline of our road turns left to join the A695 before turning right at the next roundabout onto the original line of that road.
The B6317 now heads west, initially running parallel to the Tyne Valley Line and the River Tyne before the three routes diverge and the road reaches Ryton. We run west along Main Road, meeting the B6315 in the town centre before continuing on through Crawcrook. The road reaches open country a short distance before ending at a T-junction at the western end of the A695 bypass.
