The B8049 is a convenient link from the A808 at Bearsden across to the A807 / A879 Allander Toll Roundabout west of Bardowie. The road was originally unclassified but had gained its number by 1932.
Heading east on the A808 Roman Road in Bearsden, a wide entrance on the right marks the start of the B8049, immediately crossing the railway line. Showing the historic importance of this route, the B8049 continues to follow Roman Road, the A808 becoming Roman Drive. Originally the A808 came this way to reach the A81, but it was diverted onto Roman Drive when it was built, with the B8049 presumably coming into existence at a similar time. This section and some of the route beyond the A81 junction are part of the old Roman Road, the Military Way, which serviced the forts along the Antonine Wall.
After barely 200m, the road reaches traffic lights on the A81, where it continues straight ahead, and immediately climbs a hill passing between the very expensive-looking houses of Boclair Road. At the top of this first climb, the urban area is left behind and, while the road remains S2, it is narrow and winds through high hedges in places. The line of the Antonine Wall is crossed near the summit, after which the road dips down around some sweeping bends to cross a small burn, before climbing a little across the flank of Crow Hill. There is little opportunity to exceed 40-50 for most of the way. Before long, the Tickled Trout pub is passed at the entrance to the garden centre, and then the road drops down to the terminal roundabout at Allander Toll, where it meets the A879 and the A807, although it originally met the A879 alone on the south side of the Allander Water.
