For the current B974 over the Cairn o' Mount pass, see B974.
The original route of the B974, as classified in 1922, was a lengthy cross-country route across central Aberdeenshire. Starting on the A97 at Mill of Logie, near Ordie, the road followed a winding but not particularly hilly route to the east. After running through a number of small villages and scattered settlements, the largest of which are Tarland and Echt, the road ended on the A944 at West Kingsford, near Westhill. The majority of the route ran through farmland, with patches of woodland. From Tarland it climbed up to a summit of around 320m at Tullochvenus before a long descent, the road enjoying some long straights towards the eastern end.
By 1928 this route had already been upgraded to become the A974, but in the 1970s it was downgraded once more, and numbered as the B9119, the B974 number having been reused before 1932.
