The original B981, as classified in 1922, crossed Maryculter Bridge over the River Dee at Milltimber near Peterculter in Aberdeenshire, connecting the A93 on the north side of the river with the A943 on the south bank.
It was a short road linking the A943 to the A93 but was renumbered in 1934 as part of a greatly extended B979, which it remains.
