The junction between the A96 and A939 on the east side of Nairn town centre is a signalised T junction sitting in the shadow of a skewed railway bridge. Indeed, the signals for the western arm of the A96 are on the far side of the bridge, presumably to prevent queuing traffic from sitting under the bridge itself. Two queuing lanes are provided on this arm of the junction, separating right turning traffic from that staying on the A96. Neither of the other arms have this luxury, although it is hardly needed with the westbound A96 only having a left turn, and the A939 traffic getting a signal phase all to itself.
The bridge is clearly fairly new, but it has not been replaced as might be expected simply to widen the road under the bridge. Instead, the junction used to sit a short distance to the south. On the west side of the junction, a substantial curved bank can be traced on either side of the railway embankment, and this follows the original curve of the A96, which kinked to pass squarely under the railway when it was first built. The eastern arm of the A96 then passed through the trees, following the back of the gardens in Sutors Avenue.
