Barnes Meadow Interchange is a major junction sited about a mile ESE of the centre of Northampton, at the point where the A45, A428, and A5095 meet.
History
The junction is a result of the town's status as a new town in the 1960s. The expansion of Northampton called for a new road system of expressways to distribute traffic through the town. The original plan was for the A45 to pass just to the south of the town centre on a new alignment from Upton to Barnes Meadow with a flyover above the roundabout. This was never built, so instead of having traffic coming to a halt at the roundabout it was decided to build the flyover facing southwards, which is why the junction looks so awkward on a map.
