Barrachnie Cross is a busy crossroads on the A89 around five miles east of Glasgow city centre, but still very much within the urban area. It is a signalised junction where the B7058 crosses the A89 as it connects the A8 to the north and the A74 to the south. Both routes can be particularly busy when there are problems on Glasgow's motorway network and traffic reverts to the cities streets. The junction itself is a fairly simple 4 arm crossroads between two S2 routes. Apart from the southern arm of the B7058, the two routes are wide S2s which can accommodate two approach lanes for turning traffic. The southern arm is a little narrower and has to make do with one lane in each direction. Although this is a largely suburban residential area, a block of shops sit in the north west of the corner of the junction, highlighting its historic importance as a junction.
