Beehive Ring Road Junction is a traffic signal controlled junction on the A23 around Gatwick Airport. It was built in 2003 in as part of the Beehive Business Park development and also featured interoperability with the airport perimeter road for buses which is part of the wider Fastway bus scheme taking place in Crawley at the time[1]. Pelican crossings where also provided for pedestrians along the Southern side of the A23.
The junction was built to allow LILO for all vehicles, right turns for buses onto the A23 & Airport perimeter road from the Beehive Ring Road and left turns into Beehive Ring Road from the airport perimeter road. However it appears that the links between the perimeter road and Beehive ring road / A23 only used for up to 2 years along with the bus stop and pelican crossing which all have their signals covered since their installation. In 2006 the Airport perimeter road under the terminal was closed to traffic as a security provision, this forced buses to now use the A23 instead, resulting in the busway link being redundant according to Planning Application CR/2002/0849/FUL (document "officer report") which is for the improved bus stop on the A23 at the Airport.
In September/October 2021 the signals needed to be renewed due to them coming to the end of their service life and replacement parts being difficult to get. As a result of this the dedicated bus only links between the junction & the airport perimeter road were stopped up after not being used for 15+ years. All pedestrians crossings where upgraded to Puffin and ground loops were all replaced with above ground sensors for the traffic signals.
