The Black Bridge

Spanning the Black Water at the mouth of Strath Vaich a mile or so east of the Aultguish Inn, the bridge is a twin span concrete structure. It stands on a long sweeping bend in the road in open moorland and while the bridge structure itself is straight (rather than curved), it crosses the river at a skew. The carriageway is a wide S2 flanked by the only pavements for perhaps five miles in either direction!

Immediately to the north of the bridge traces of its predecessor can be found. A large parking area at the junction with the track up Strath Vaich hints at the old road alignment, and a short stroll to the riverbank reveals a large block of masonry which is part of the old bridge abutment. Out in the middle of the channel, more masonry can be spied on the central island. However, the rest of the structure is long gone.
