The roundabout is named after Blackfriars Road, the street name of the A53 off the roundabout. This in turn refers back to the long-gone priory in the area.
It was not until the 1980s, with the upgrade of the whole inner ring road to dual carriageway, that the A53 within the ring road was downgraded. However, signposts at this roundabout now do not wish to admit that the A53 continues through the town.
