Crossings related to the A839 | |||
Blarich Bridge crosses the Lettie River in Strath Fleet on the A839. It is a modern concrete span carrying an S2 road with narrow pavements between metal railings. The road to the west is in a shallow cutting as it crosses fields. An older bridge once carried the road over the river a little further downstream, with the road taking a sweeping bend through the fields. However, and unusually in the Highlands, all traces of the bridge and old road line seem to have disappeared, the road being removed and grassed over by the farmer. There is a suggestion of 'crop marks' in aerial photography identifying the old road, but as this line curves across the fields to pass through gates, it could equally be caused by farm traffic crossing the fields! Old maps, however, clearly show the road on the old line as late as 1969.
