The Boot and Shoe was initially a junction of Selby Road and the Great North Road, named after the pub at the junction. This was upgraded to a grade separated trumpet junction in 1964 with the A1 running north to south and the A63 crossing over a viaduct. The northbound A63 to A1 sliproad was later closed with the opening of the A1(M) up to Bramham in 1999.
With the upgrade of A1 to motorway between Hook Moor and Ferrybridge in 2006, the junction was replaced again, this time with an at-grade roundabout, as the main traffic flow is now between Selby Road and southern section of the Great North Road.
