Bowhouse Roundabout is missing an arm. Whilst it is already a busy 5-arm junction, it should have a sixth arm stretching southwards across the Avon Gorge to bypass the difficult descent to Torphichen Bridge. The rest of the current A801 route was built in the 1980s as a strategic link between the M8 and M9, but unfortunately it was never completed, instead leaving the A801 to follow its historic route down into the gorge. To the north of the roundabout, the B805 follows the original line of the A801 into Falkirk, while the B825 passes from east to west, connecting together a string of small communities in the Avon Valley and surrounding hills. Many of these communities originated as coal mining settlements, and while some were only transient, a few remain.
