The junction at Brackley is a staggered crossroads where the B9006 crosses the A96. The stagger was added many years ago to improve safety at the junction, and saw the northern arm of the B9006 deflected a short distance to the east, the southern arm has also been very slightly moved to provide better access to the restaurant sitting in the corner of the junction. Central right turn lanes were also added to the A96 to protect turning traffic.
Future Plans
With the planned upgrade of the A96 between Inverness and Nairn to a full dual carriageway, plans are progressing to replace the junction with a Grade separated design. The new dual carriageway is also planned to cross from north to south of the existing line at the junction, which may lead to some interesting traffic management whilst the work progresses!
The new junction will be a folded diamond, with the eastbound slips being in the north west corner, and the southbound slips in the south east corner. This will allow connections to the existing A96, which is to be retained as a local access road. That to the south of the new road will be re-routed to the rear of the restaurant, whilst that to the north will remain closer to the existing line. The southern arm of the B9006 will be realigned further east, to line up more closely with the existing northern arm.
