Crossings related to the B862

Bridge of Tarff crosses the River Tarff near Fort Augustus and carries the B862. It appears to be a fairly modern crossing, carrying a single lane of traffic, although the roadway has been reduced in width to accommodate a wide pavement / cycle track. This has been done as part of the wide-ranging upgrade works to the B862 / B851 route in connection with windfarm development, and also saw the bridge substantially strengthened, with new brick parapets built, on the original pavements to replace the original metal railings, since 2011.

An old record from 1845 says that an ancient wooden bridge once stood here, but had been allowed to fall into a dangerous condition after suffering some damage. The implication is that this was the bridge for the military road, and so presumably was similar to the surviving timber bridge over the Oich less than half a mile away. Unfortunately, records of this bridges refurbishment or replacement have not been found, nor those for the current span.
