For a long time this junction was a three-way roundabout with all arms being the A4174. This dated back to the original route of the A4174, which ran from the A38 at Filton, through Bromley Heath (without being interrupted by a roundabout) and down to the A432 in Mangotsfield. This last section remained as a spur of the A4174 until c2002 when it became part of the extended A4017, leaving the A4174 to its day job of being the Avon Ring Road!
The junction lies in the middle of the infamous 2+ Lane that ran from the M32 to the A432, and also features slip lanes on its northern and western flanks to bypass the roundabout itself.
