Bursledon Bridge crosses the River Hamble on the A27 at Burlesdon just outside Southampton.
History
There has been a bridge here since 1798. Upon classification, the road over the bridge had no number, as it was privately tolled. It was sold to Hampshire County Council in 1930, which meant the road across the bridge should have a classified number for maintenance purposes. The A3024 had already been extended over the Northam Bridge when tolls were removed in 1929, and the road was re-routed via Bursledon Bridge, leaving the recently-extended route from Bitterne to Botley to become an extended A334.
A replacement bridge began construction in 1933, finishing two years later. As a consequence of a higher-quality road, it was then reclassified as part of the A27 in the 1935 Road numbering revision.
