The C1001 is a good quality route which runs west from the B874 just outside Thurso, running roughly parallel to and then converging with the A836. The route is S2 throughout, albeit sometimes too narrow for a centre line, and whilst traffic is generally lighter than on the A836 to the north, the alignment includes some sharp bends which, combined with the narrow carriageway when oncoming traffic is met, means the route is generally no quicker than the main road.
The route starts at a TOTSO with the B874, continuing ahead where the B road turns left. It then runs south west across fields dotted with farms and occasioanlly larger groups of houses. After about 4 miles, the Forss Water is crossed, with the road winding gently down and then up the shallow river valley. The fields have more of a moorland character to the west of the river, and apart from the roadside village of Shebster there is considerably less settlement. The road then comes to an end as it meets the A836 at the Bridge of Isauld at the east end of Reay.
