The C1096 is the former line of the A890, prior to the Strome Ferry bypass route being built on the south side of Loch Carron. It therefore runs from the village of Lochcarron, along the north shore of the loch to the old ferry Slipway at Strome Castle. Whilst it is never too far from the loch shore, it is often hidden from view behind banks of trees, and it is only towards the southern end that the loch comes into view. The junction just before the castle is now a TOTSO, with the through route continuing south west along the minor road to Ardaneaskan, whilst the C1096 turns left and curves past the castle to the slipway.
