The C143a is a strange route to have been retained when the A75 Gretna bypass was built. It starts at a staggered crossroads, with central reservation gaps, on the A75 a little to the west of the village, and follows Gretna Road as it winds over the railway, before turning east to meet the C142a at Gretna Green. Apart from the handful of properties along the road, all of the movements which this road permits are catered for elsewhere locally with grade-separated slip roads, so the connection to the A75 is hardly necessary.
