The C149, maintained by Stockton-on-Tees Council, is a route running from the old Billingham Bypass to Wolviston Village.
Route
The route starts at a roundabout junction at the King's Arms Hotel in Billingham. There is an off slip from the northbound C161 dual carriageway and two other local roads. The road here is known as Wolviston Road, and heads northbound towards the village of Wolviston as a dual carriageway.
Upon entering the village, the road becomes High Street, and the dual carriageway ends. On the left, The Green C147 joins us, just before we reach a bend in the road. Here we turn left onto Durham Road, which bends around to the right and becomes Coal Road. The route ends at a LILO junction with the A689, however traffic joining this road may turn right by U-turning at the roundabout nearby.
History
Prior to 1967, the A19 and the A689 used to meet in the centre of Wolviston. In 1967, the £7.0m Wolviston to Sheraton dual
carriageway was opened north of Billingham. This diverted the two main roads away from the village, and the route was downgraded. The bypass was again bypassed in 1982, downgrading the A19 route to become the C161, leaving us with the situation we have today.
