The C161 is a class III road which takes the former route of the A414 bypassing Harlow to the north.

The road is rural in character with wide carriageway. It starts on the A414 at Eastwick Roundabout, and continues in an eastwards direction through Burnt Mill Corner and Pye Corner in Gilston to meet the A1184 in High Wych.

There is a piece of carriageway separation in High Wych.
