The C162 is a short class III road which runs east from the junction of London Road and Cambridge Road in Sawbridgeworth to Sawbridgeworth Station and the county boundary with Essex. From here it continues and joins the A1060 at Hatfield Heath and heads onwards to Chelmsford. This section gained its class III status and number when the A414 was routed south through Harlow.
The road is semi-urban in character with pedestrian footway and is essentially a long, steep hill.
