The C170 is a class III road which takes the former route of the A10 through Buntingford. There is a short multiplex with the B1038 and a TOTSO on route.
The road is urban in character for most of its route, taking in Buntingford High Street. There is a short rural section to the north which is, as of 2017, earmarked for in-fill housing between the town and the A10 bypass.
