The C179 forms a collection of routes in the shape of an algebraic-type X running from Armagh to south of Lough Gall and consisting of two spurs. Starting in Armagh, the road leaves the A3 and heads north in a clockwise direction around Castle Dillon Lake. On the north side of the lake the first spur turns off to the west and meets the B77. To the north east of the lake the road comes to a T junction and the road south east is the second spur which returns to the A3, this time just west of Richhill. The remainder of the road continues north, meeting the B111 near Lough Gall.
