The C196 is a bit of an odd route, it consists of two clearly separate roads which have the same number. Interestingly, there is no C195 to be found in Northern Ireland which might indicate that one of the segments of the C196 could once have been numbered C195. The northern segment starts on the A3 at Farnaloy and heads initially south but gradually bends to the south west as it meets the B132 at Drummond. The southern segment is a former section of the to the south west as it meets the B132 at Drummond. The southern segment is a former section of the B3 which starts on the B3 to the west of Keady adjacent to the C193 and heads south west towards Curragh where it ends upon reaching the border. The road itself continues into County Monaghan as the L3530 and reaches the village of Clontibret.
