This article is about the Class III road numbered C1 maintained by Orkney Islands Council. For other roads numbered C1, see C1.
The C1 on Orkney follows the Old Finnstown Road west from the island capital of Kirkwall. This is a more direct route than that followed by the A965 along the coast, as it crosses to the south of Wideford Hill instead of curving round the north. The route is still well used as a through route, particularly by locals, as it avoids the busy harbour and industrial areas.
Starting on the A964 in the south west of Kirkwall, the route runs west, initially along Glaitness Road, which soon becomes Old Finnstown Road as the urban area is left behind. The route is climbing almost from the beginning as it skirts the southern flank of Wideford Hill, with farms sitting back from the roadside down tracks and drives. A right turn cuts back to the A965 near the coast, whilst a second climbs up to the summit of the hill. After crossing a low summit, the road drops back down to the flat lands along the coast, slowly converging with the A965, the two meeting near the centre of Finnstown.
