For other roads numbered C285, see C285.
The C285 starts on the A25 near Ballydugan Lake and makes its way south east. Soon the C286 is given way to at a crossroads and by this point the road is heading in an eastward direction.
After a short while, the road approaches a T Junction; however, the C285 takes priority and turns sharply to the right. Here the character of the road changes considerably - while the carriageway itself is no wider, a large grassy verge has appeared to the left hand side of the road between the hedges, wider than the carriageway itself, and the road itself is straighter with sweeping corners, rather than the twists and turns of the field boundaries that had characterised the road previously. This is the Old Course Road, part of the original Downpatrick horse racecourse.
Eventually the road meets the B176 at a T junction. The road continues east from another T junction to the south and before long it crosses the B1 at a scattered crossroads. The road ends upon reaching Ballee at a TOTSO on the C284.
