C404 (Perth and Kinross)
|Distance:||5.8 miles (9.3 km)|
|Meets:||A85, A93, A90|
|Route outline (key)|
The C404 climbs out of Perth, over Kinnoull Hill a popular woodland park with some spectacular views over the city and the Firth of Tay. It then drops down to meet the A90 at Glencarse. The actual start point of the route isn't clear. The council state 'A93 Dundee Road', but that takes traffic up the traffic-calmed Manse Road. The main, signed route is further north, leaving the A93 where it meets the A85 at the eastern end of Perth Bridges, and climbing up the fully S2 Lochie Brae and Muirhall Road, past the hospital.
The edge of the city is quickly reached, and the road swings southwards into the forest of Kinnoull Hill, with a large car park on the left. Turning east again, the road winds along the top of the escarpment, with the River Tay far below, steadily dropping down above Kinfauns. The route then cuts through the small but steep Glen Carse to the village of the same name on the A90. Today, the village is bypassed by the main road, which forms a barrier between Glencarse and the larger St Madoes on the other side of the road. The C404 therefore doubles back along the former A90 route through the village to the Glencarse Junction, although there are other connections with the eastbound carriageway of the A90.
