The C409 forms an alternative route between Kesh and Milltown with closer proximity to the shores of Lower Lough Erne. The road starts on the A35 at the north end of Kesh and follows Crevinish Road south through the village. The road TOTSOs west on the edge of the village and swings round to the south and east keeping with the lough. The road eventually meets the A47 (former B82) at Milltown.
In the 1930s the C409 was numbered as the B123. The route served the important wartime base at Castle Archdale, now a significant tourist centre and caravan park.
