The C40 is a lengthy route which starts on the B6401 at Otterburn near Morebattle. It wiggles south west across the hillside to Cessford, from where a spur doubles back to reach the B6401 near Caverton. The mainline continues south, curving round to the west below Bank Hill to reach the crossroads at Crailinghall. Turning south west again, it climbs over a low hill, dropping steeply down to meet the C41 just outside Jedburgh.
