This article is about the Class III road numbered C43 maintained by Orkney Islands Council. For other roads numbered C43, see C43.
The C43 is an important route in Stromness. Although not signed as such, the A965 through the town is regarded by many as being one-way, and so the C43, which follows Back Road, is the northbound return route once the end of the A965 is reached. It starts by doubling back and climbing up the hill a little, winding between houses, although not so severely as the main road below. At a mini roundabout, the route turns sharp right, staying on Back Road, which slowly winds down the hill again to meet North End Road, surprisingly, at the north end of town. Until recently, this was the A965, but the main road has now apparently been rerouted along Ferry Road to better serve the ferry port. It is not clear if the C43 has therefore been extended or not.
