For other roads numbered C44, see C44.
The C44 is mainly the most direct route from the village of Letham to Brechin via other routes, but forming the bulk of the centre part of the route. It starts on the A932 at the south east corner of Balgavies Loch and heads north, skirting the eastern edge of the loch before crossing the B9113.
Continuing north, the route begins to climb the eastern shoulder of Turin Hill. The road continues northwards on to Aberlemno but we turn right and head for Pitkennedy. From here, we enter a three mile long straight which heads north-eastwards across Melgund Muir, skirting the edge of Montreathmont Forest to the right to reach Aldbar where eventually the road heads downhill steeply via two hairpin bends and ends at a fork junction with the B9134 near Stannochy.
