The C493 starts on the A368 at North Widcombe and meanders southwards to South Widcombe. It then briefly turns north to cross Shrowl Bridge, before resuming a south westwards direction to reach the B3114. Continuing ahead, it enters East Harptree Village, running through the middle before climbing steadily up Smitham Hill on the north slopes of the Mendips.
