The C49S starts on the B9001 at Meikle Folla, and climbs up quite steeply above the main road to a fork at the church. Here, it keeps left, curving across the hillside to Cross of Jackston, where it drops down the hill a little. Turning left at the next junction, the route follows the Kings Burn south east before crossing it to meet the A920. For some reason, the farm drive to Westerton is included as a spur.
