The C538 starts on the A54 on the western banks of the Lower Bann and heads west. After passing a T junction with the southern end of the C537, the road TOTSOs left (south west) and crosses the Macosquin River. The road then crosses the B207 at a crossroads followed by the A29 at a scattered crossroads. The road initially heads in more of a westward direction, but soon turns south west again after crossing the route of the C539. The road eventually ends on the B186 at Cashel Bridge.
