The C53 is listed in the council list as following Polton Road in Loanhead. However, as this does not reach another C, let alone A or B road at either end, it has to be presumed that it also includes some other roads. We therefore start on the A768 in Loanhead and follow a short section of Church Street to reach Polton Road. This heads south east at first, then becomes twistier as it winds down the steep hill to cross the Bilston Burn and then the River North Esk at Polton. There was once a large industrial complex along the south bank here, but it has been replaced by a far more salubrious bowling club and housing estate. From Polton, the road climbs again up Polton Bank, no less steeply, but the bends are easier, to reach Polton Road in Bonnyrigg.
