The C54 forms a loop around the northern edge of Stevenston. It starts on the A738 and heads north up Kerelaw Road, which winds around the grounds of the old Kerelaw Castle on the edge of the urban area. After a series of twists and turns, the route turns left onto Hillhead Road, quickly reaching a crossroads. Previously, the C54 continued ahead onto Castleview Road, but with the construction of the A78 bypass, this route is now severed, so the C54 presumably turns left, over the A78, and then right to resume Castleview Road. This runs back to the A738 between Stevenston and Kilwinning.
