The C56S starts on the B9002 at Kennethmont and heads south, climbing slightly to reach Clatt. Here, it forks left in the village, and then right at Ford to climb the steep flank of Suie Hill. At the shallow pass just west of the summit, the route becomes the C56M and continues south to the A944 at Bridge of Alford.
