The C56 follows Bogwood Road through the Mayfield area of Newtongrange. Whilst it can be assumed that the route starts on the B6482, it is less clear where the other end is. It meets the C63, Eskview Road, at a roundabout, which could be the end of the route, as the rest of it is effectively a dead end. However, it is equally possible that the route somehow doglegs along or past Westhouses Road and heads out of town, crossing the hill to meet the B6372.
