The C578 is a complicated route in Derry city centre. It consists primarily of the four roads which exit the centre from the war memorial inside of The Diamond (Butcher Street, Shipquay Street, Ferryquay Street and Bishop Street Within). All four roads pass under the famous City Wall on their way out. Butcher Street becomes Fahan Street as it links to the B507 nearby. Shipquay Street very soon after passing under the wall comes to a TOTSO on the B528 and with the one way constraints traffic has no choice but to continue ahead along Shipquay Place. Ferryquay Street continues out of the centre as Carlisle Road and a spur along the north east only Orchard Street links to the B528 Orchard Street at the point where the northbound and southbound only stretches of the latter both start. Continuing along Carlisle Road leads to a roundabout at Craigavon Bridge crossing the Foyle where the road meets the A2 and the B507. Bishop Street Within rather appropriately changes its name to Bishop Street Without after passing under the wall and continues out of the centre beyond the B507. Eventually the road comes to an end on the A40 Foyle Road, well to the west of the city centre.
