The C5B is a lengthy route which connects up many other C roads in this part of Aberdeenshire. It starts on the A950 at Dunshillock just to the north of Old Deer and heads east, quickly crossing the C4B. The A92 is crossed a little to the north of Mintlaw, and then the C29B turns north a couple of miles further east at Dumpstown. As the route drops down to cross the River Ugie, the C39B turns south at Auchlee, and near the top of the hill on the east bank of the river, the C32B turns north for Rora. The C5B is now dropping back down to the banks of the Rive Ugie, with the C28B turning north at Artlaw, and finally, just yards from the end, the C43B meets the C5B at Inverugie. A short distance further on it terminates itself on the A90.
