The C679 is one of County Tyrone's longer C roads. It starts on the A5 north west of Omagh and heads north west. After several kilometres the road crosses the B84 and soon comes to a T junction at Drumlegagh from which it continues both east and west. Going east the road soon turns sharply north, passing west of Loughs Mary, Fanny and Catherine. This stretch of the route eventually runs out at the B84 west of Newtownstewart. Another segment starts on the B84 further south and heads north west across this one, towards the B164 at Milltown Lodge. From here a spur heads off to the south west, TOTSOs on and off of Lislafferty Road and comes to an end on the C680 near Drumlegagh after passing through Letterbin Wood. From Milltown Lodge, the route continues north and meets the A5 just south of the River Derg. Back at the T junction at Drumlegagh the road going west turns generally in a more north westerly direction towards the C672 and as it does so it negotiates a couple of tight bends and TOTSOs west at a crossroads. The road resumes after a brief multiplex with the C672 and continues west, terminating on the B50 south of Castlederg.
